This project aims to develop a program in collaboration with the Australian Breastfeeding Association on breastfeeding basics and tutorials. Small World Social wants to make use of the latest in wearable and mobile technology to help mothers on their breastfeeding journey. We want to create a trial to find out if technology can realistically make a significant impact in the lives of mothers and her baby.
Google Glass
The core device that inspired the team at Small World Social to pursue this project is Google Glass. Being a tech start-up, we are always on the look out for new technologies that we can be used to help us innovate and improve lives. Google Glass is a very advanced piece of technology. Its hand-free and voice activated user experience allows us to deliver contextual learning where other devices would be crippled by the learning experience and maybe even fail altogether.
The plan was to use Google Glass in two different ways: delivering the most relevant information when mothers need it and connecting her with a trained breastfeeding counsellor for more real-time and personal help.
We think that using Google Glass to call a breastfeeding counsellor is more beneficial than traditional video calls using a standard webcam. With Glass counsellors can see exactly what a mother is seeing and guide her through the support much more clearly and efficiently.
Online Portal
Small World Social’s Online learning portal on an iPad
In order to provide mothers with the best information on their breastfeeding journey, we decided early on to bring the ABA’s medically endorsed and vast library of resources to Small World Social’s own learning portal. The portal app can be accessed from a tablet or computer and allows mothers to explore and personalise the resources to match their needs. We think the key for learning is providing resources that is curate, central and on-demand.
